Mount Mitchell State Park is a gem of a national park in North Carolina.  Naturally, the main attraction is Mount Mitchell which is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi and south of Canada.   The top of the mountain is at an elevation of 6,684 feet.  It was a beautiful drive from Asheville along the Blue Ridge Parkway, although once we got high enough to be driving in the clouds, visibility was terrible.  Once we were above and looking down, the clouds looked like a sea of snow.

The park was beautifully maintained and one ranger said that there have been a record number of visitors this year.  There were many serious hikers, but for those without the gear or the boots, the 300 yards from the parking level to the observation deck is a nice paved walkway.
